• Biblical Families is not a dating website. It is a forum to discuss issues relating to marriage and the Bible, and to offer guidance and support, not to find a wife. Click here for more information.

Our story so far was a bit of a disappointment but a message to not give up

Here we run into the "mia" issue again.

Is the elder or deacon?

"Wife man" meaning married

"First wife man" meaning he is/was faithful to the wife of his youth even if she is now deceased, or even if he now has additional wives along with her

"Husband of one wife" meaning not polygamous

Something else?
Put any of the popular interpretations on mia, it still comes out that he has to have a wife.
One wife.
First wife.
A wife.

Do we have any proof of his marital status?
I had heard that he was a widower, which would have qualified him.

It would be amusing if the man who appointed elders wasn’t qualified to be one.
I don't think of it as a qualification so much as a recommendation on who is best equipped for those roles.

I, for one, don’t think derailment should be a feature.

I think it’s a bug that needs fixing.
My orderly mind has thought this from the beginning of this Forum, and I have complained to @nathan many times to "clean things up." But along the way, I have gained a bit more grace for it, not completely for sure, but I view it as a natural thing people do as they discuss things. I see this happen in real life conversations all the time as one thought takes you to another and before you know it you have talked about 10 different things.

I still desire things to not get too far away from the original topic and am happy when a new thread is created to continue a particular thought. But, it doesn't make searching for topics easy. So, I can only hope that it might give others something new to think on and grow with, at the least it gives other members insight into the people who are posting. Good? Bad? Only they can decide. :-)

I suppose creating a new thread whenever a derailment occurs could be automated with the help of AI.

And who programmed AI? AI does not generate new anything. We now have inherent bias in everything and will not be able to tell.

Applogies for adding to the mess of any attempts at the derailment clean-up. But I just had to mention as someone with 2 decades experience in data-science and machine learning. This is actually one of the better use cases for "AI".

And who programmed AI? AI does not generate new anything. We now have inherent bias in everything and will not be able to tell.

This is a completely valid question, with a completely accurate, albeit broad conclusion. AI does not generate anything new. Machine learning is simply taking a dataset (to or more related forms of captured data) and modeling that data with the intent on being able to produce rearrangements of that data that us humans can find meaning in. While this process cannot create anything new, what it can do is give us insights that are seemingly humanly impossible to discover ourselves.

With machine learning we can run many epochs of training to find signals in what would largley been considered just noise. Once we find a signal in the data (something meaningful, something insightful), we can then use it to further fine tune the model so that we can automate things that are useful to us in our God Given Dominion.

AI should not be used to outsource our creativity.

Why would anyone outsource their creativity? Because we don't have time to sit down and draw a picture, or we don't have the time to write a beautiful poem? Or we don't have the patience and attention span to learn how to effectively communicate? The number one reason is because they don’t have time to be creative. Let's bury our talents! How ungodly!

Unfortunately, this is the way that AI is currently being used by the majority of humanity.

It should be used as a tool to automate process that give us more time to explore God's creation and worship him and exercise the creative agencies that help us to glorify him

With all that said,

I wouldn't delegate agency to any AI to classify what a derailment in a thread is. That is the human discernment that comes from wisdom. What I would do is make a one-click button that an admin would press that would move posts to new threads with a generated title that closely resembles what the actual new topic of discussion is.

This way there would be no scrapped posts, and it would be easier for the rest of the community to discover the insightful wisdom of the members. Or steer clear of useless and unnecessary time-wasting stuff. This post itself could go either way depending on whom is reading it.

We already have that. Meet your friendly overworked admin @The Revolting Man.

Well, AI could assist him in this endeavor.
